The $84 Trillion Question

An estimated $84 trillion in private wealth will move between generations over the next twenty years, the largest such transition in recorded history. The instruments most families rely on to manage it, discretionary trusts, offshore companies, foundations, were designed in an era of limited regulatory coordination and low transparency.

What changed

The Common Reporting Standard now connects more than 110 tax authorities through automatic information exchange. FATCA added parallel obligations for US-linked assets. And the Panama, Paradise and Pandora disclosures dismantled the confidentiality assumptions that many offshore structures quietly depended on.

The four-part test

A structure fit for today must deliver four things at once: full regulatory compliance, genuine confidentiality, operational flexibility, and tax efficiency. Most traditional tools deliver two or three. Properly structured Private Placement Life Insurance is one of the few instruments that delivers all four, which is why globally mobile families are increasingly converting older structures into PPLI.

Why structure beats size

The families that come through a generational transition intact are rarely the ones with the largest estates. They are the ones with the clearest plan and the strongest architecture around it. The transfer is coming either way; the only question is whether it lands by design or by default.

Wealth is not the legacy. Structure is.

Watch the companion explanation. Dr. Sanjay outlines the scale of the intergenerational transfer and why the quality of the receiving structure matters as much as the value being transferred.
